Jedi Council
A Jedi council consists of several Jedi: Knights, Masters, or both. They reside in the four smaller spires of the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, where they assign tasks to Jedi and promote Padawan learners to Jedi Knights. In the days of the Old Republic, Jedi Master Yoda led the High Council.
High Council
The Jedi High Council met in the Temple's southeast tower to govern the Jedi Order. Twelve Jedi Masters or Jedi Knights -- five permanent members, four long-term members, three limited-term members -- would guide the Jedi Order and advise the Supreme Chancellor. Members included Yoda, Mace Windu, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Anakin Skywalker.
Other Councils
- The Council of First Knowledge met in the Temple's northwest tower and gave advice based on ancient Jedi lore.
- The Council of Reconciliation 's five members met in the Temple's southwest tower to seek peaceful solutions to troubles.
- The Reassignment Council met in the Temple's northeast tower and assigned jobs to Jedi, younglings, and other Jedi students.
Jedi Temple
The Jedi Temple was built over a sacred mountain granted to the Jedi Order by the Galactic Republic after the Great Hyperspace War in 5,000 BBY. Originally a simple monastery, it was built up over the centuries and, after the destruction of the library planet of Ossus during the Great Sith War (about 4,000 BBY), it became the home of the Jedi councils and the headquarters of the Jedi Order.
The central Temple Spire is the tallest and most important, a sacred place and repository of the ancient texts of the founding Jedi. It is surrounded by four smaller Council spires.
