Jedi
The Jedi Order is an organization that trains individuals sensitive to the Force to use their power to help maintain order in the Galactic Republic. The Jedi serve primarily as investigators, negotiators, and special police, but during the Clone Wars, they served as officers in the Grand Army of the Republic. The Jedi Order requires strict discipline from its members and only trains them in Light Side Force techniques.
Organization
The Jedi Order has at least three known ranks.
- Padawan - an apprentice who is learning to use the Force. Apprentices vary in age from early childhood to adulthood, and presumably there is considerable "rank" variation among them as a result.
- Knight - a former Padawan who has passed a test known as the Trials, allowing him or her to operate without supervision.
- Master - a Jedi Knight who has finished training at least one Padawan. It is not entirely clear what sort of authorization a Jedi Knight needs from the Order to take an apprentice.
According to secondary sources, there are three primary roles that Jedi pursue.
- Jedi Guardian - primarily combatants
- Jedi Consular - primarily diplomats
- Jedi Sentinel - primarily scouts, explorers, or investigators
The Jedi Order is commanded by the Jedi Council, which consists of several Master-ranked Jedi. The Order exists to serve the Republic and generally does the wishes of the Supreme Chancellor of the Republic, although such authority usually does not extend to internal matters of the Order, such as the awarding of ratings and the selection of Jedi Council members.
Limitations
While Jedi are devastating warriors individually, they were not used to operating as a cohesive force in numbers. Their lack of group-combat experience was most evident at the Battle of Geonosis, where were overwhelmed by the superior numbers, combined arms, and coherent tactics of the CIS's battle droids.
