The Verteron Array was a civilian terraforming facility on Mars. It was capable of firing a beam to deflect asteroids into Mars' polar caps.
Terra Prime incident
In 2155, the array was briefly occupied by members of the Terra Prime group, who intended to use the array's beam as a weapon of terror. After demonstrating the beam's power on the Moon, the group threatened to destroy the Earth Starfleet headquarters in San Francisco. The hijacking ended when the facility was retaken by captain Archer[1].
