The researchers also asked patients to assess themselves on the basis of a series symptoms that included delusions of control over their illness. The patients were not allowed to have any alcohol. Finally, they were asked to indicate how they had spent their time between the 2-week testing phase and first meeting to discuss the study findings. After the subjects met 2 weeks earlier, half of them were given medication alone and the others met with study's principal investigator (PI). At the first meeting patients were asked to provide as much information possible and to rate their feeling of control (at the end, this would comprise an overall assessment of how strongly they felt that their conditions were in control and to what extent they could control them). The remaining people who met without medication or with but the PI received either non-psychiatric therapy or advice on how to cope with the illness or problems that may arise. The researchers observed that all of the individuals who disulfiram like reaction medications met with PI showed significant improvement in their illness symptoms, which included delusions. Interestingly, however, the patients who had been given a diagnosis of schizophrenia did not show better response to medication, even with the PI's help. It appeared that although patients who thought they had a delusional episode improved significantly, those who thought they were suffering from a psychotic disorder remained unresponsive to any treatment. In addition to the improvement reported in study, it was shown the first study that patients who met with the PI experienced a major improvement with their social and work function. This improvement is reflected in the positive changes quality of life that they reported. also reported these improvements in their functioning were maintained when the researchers compared them to a control group. "The results of our first study are clear evidence that the 'disease' is not as fixed people have often thought," the study's lead author, Thomas Kavounas (CAMBRIDGE, Cambridge, UK), said. "If these experiences are repeated and the patient's perception of illness is held strong to the end, they develop coping skills and attitudes that support the person to continue function within the workplace and social life as well the community." Kavounas concluded, "This important finding indicates that the symptoms of patients with severe psychosis are not as incurable many previously believed and has shown that they can be managed and successfully resolved by a combination of psychotherapy and medication." The study was supported by Wellcome Trust (grant number 083837). It has received support from a grant awarded to Professor Kavounas by the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (Grants-09-25, 10/25 10/26).
