Socialism refers to a set of egalitarian schools of thought based around the concept that it is beneficial for society to function together to actively minimize differences between socio-economic classes. One who subscribes to said schools of thought is known as a Socialist.
While Social Democratic policies have been successful in Europe, in the United States, significant portions of the population have developed a strong fear of Socialism and anything they perceive as being Socialist.
