A spacecraft is an artifical device designed to operate in space. The first known spacecraft was Sputnik 1, which was launched on October 4, 1957 by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. The first spacecraft to carry a human into space was Vostok-1, launched on April 12, 1963.
