A region of space near the Kessel Run comprised of a gargantuan amount of Black Holes in close proximity. Inside the depths of the Maw lay the top secret Maw Institute where some of the greatest minds of the Empire toiled away in secrey, creating such artifacts as the Death Star Prototype, the Sun Crusher and other Super weapons.
One effect of the black holes is that runners of the Kessel Run can shorten time as well as space via dangerous routes or Microjumps. The best known example of this is Han Solo achieving the run in less than 12 Parsecs, a measure of distance, not time.
