Retroactive continuity (or retcon for short) is the practice of "changing the past" in a storyline to be consistent with more recent story elements. For example, in the Stargate series, the writers changed the description of the Goa'uld species from humanoids to worm-like parasites that possessed humanoid hosts, altering the backstory of the villain Ra from the movie.
