In terms of military technology, a turret is an armored weapons mount that can rotate to bring the weapon to bear. Turrets can either be stationary fixed defenses or mounted on vehicles such as tanks or ships. The best first example of an armored turret was deployed as the primary armament of the ironclad USS Monitor.
