A gamma ray burst (GRB) is a short, intense, directional blast of radiation. Lasting anywhere from a fraction of a second to several hours, they are the brightest electromagnetic events ever observed. These events have been observed occurring in other galaxies.

GRBs are thought to be products of a supernova, a high-mass star imploding to form a neutron star or a black hole.
