Avatar (2009 Film)
Avatar is a science fiction film directed by James Cameron, released in 2009. It is notable for being the highest grossing film of all time. It is not to be confused with Avatar: The Last Airbender. A sequel is currently in the works.
Setting
Avatar takes place on Pandora, a moon in which RDA, a mining company, has set up a mining colony. Its activities bring it into conflict with indigenous primitive sapients known as the Na'vi.
Reception and Debate Position
Avatar's reception has been somewhat mixed. Most of it's criticism came over the fact that large sections of its plot have been used multiple times over by earlier films (such as Dances with Wolves and Ferngully: The Last Rainforest). In fact, TVTropes has a page with a very long list of similar works.
Despite that, it has been a big-budget hit and has come up in versus debates frequently because of it's success. Much effort was put into the design of both Human and Pandoran elements in the story. That said, its ranking in terms of of versus scenarios is fairly low. Their is no FTL capacities and humanity has minimal extrasolar presence. Typical scenarios involve ground combat against the Na'vi and/or RDA Marines by small numbers of forces or survival in the dangerous jungles of Pandora.
