Deserts are large areas unable to sustain much life.

Tatooine is a desert planet in the Star Wars universe featuring the Dune Sea, the Sarlacc, Tusken Raiders, and Jabba's Palace.

Also, Captain Kirk fought the Gorn in the desert near the Star Trek studios in Southern California.
