Said Nanites were eventually dropped off on an alien planet by the enterprise crew and could easily be destroyed by bursts of electromagnetic energy.

Nanotechnology is the technology of developing microsopic devices. The best known varient is nanorobotics, the creation of microscopic robots, which are generally expected to be used in medical applciations and computer manufacturing.

Star Trek
