Nuclear weapons (also known as thermonuclear devices and atomic bombs) are a category of military ordinance based on releasing energy from nuclear fission or nuclear fusion. Such weapons are orders of magnitude more powerful than more conventional chemical explosives. The first nuclear weapon was detonated on July 16th, 1945, with the first military use of nuclear weapons occurring on August 6th, 1945.
