The USS Odyssey was charged with rescuing Captain Benjamin Sisko and Quark who were being held by the Dominion near the entrance to the wormhole into the Gamma Quadrant.  After off loading non-essential civilian personnel at Jadzia Dax's suggestion the Odyssey transited the worm hole accompanied by a pair of runabouts from DS9.
The Odyssey was set upon by three Dominion attack fighters.  Captain Keogh and his crew rapidly discovered that main Dominion weapon, phased anti-polaron beams, easily pierced standard Federation shields heavily damaging the far larger vessel in a rapid series of attack runs by the Dominion forces.
Keogh was forced to drop his shields and transfer power to his weapons in the hopes of driving off the Dominion forces and used his Runabout escorts to harass the Dominion ships and give the stricken vessel some breathing room.
Valiantly holding off the Dominion attack and giving the runabout crewed by Chief Obrien enough time to beam Captain Sisko, Quark and Eris (A Dominion prisoner discovered by Sisko on the planet surface) aboard, the Odyssey, limping with a badly damaged nacelle, led the retreat back to the wormhole.  At this point the battle was obviously won by the Dominion as they had easily driven off one of the top line starships of the Federation with no losses to themselves and apparently light to no damage to the fighters, gathered valuable combat intelligence on Starfleet weapons and tactics as well as unbenownst to Starfleet planting a spy in their midst in the form of the Vorta Eris.
The Jem'Hadar had one more lesson to teach the Federation.  One of the Dominion fighters accelerated rapidly and performed a ramming manuever into the forward secondary hull of the shieldless starship.  Debris from the impact and secondary explosions struck the badly damamged nacelle initiating a catastrphoc loss of containment and the Odyssey was lost with all hands.
