Trilithium is an exotic material produced as a byproduct of Federation warp core operations (TNG "Starship Mine"). It is dangerously unstable. Beacause of this, the material is often used in the creation of terrorist weapons and can have the effect of rendering a planet dangerous to human life depending on the configuration. [1] It was also a critical component of Dr. Soran's star-collapsing weapon in Star Trek: Generations.
