Tanks are a type of Armored Fighting Vehicle characterized by thick armor, heavy weapons, and no troop transport capacity.
Modern tanks are tracked vehicles used primarily for line-of-sight combat, armed cannons and machine guns. The first tanks were built during the Great War by the British as a means of overcomming German trench lines, but proper doctrine for using tanks would not develop until World War II.
Tanks got their name because of a ploy to avoid German intelligence discovering their first deployment by describing them as mobile water tanks when shipping them to the front.
