Mines are a catagory of military ordinance designed for area denial. Mines normally consist of an explosive and a triggering mechanism designed to set it off when an intruder passes nearby or touches it. Common categories of mines include antipersonnel, anti-tank and anti-ship.
Mines in Science Fiction
A somewhat common concept in science fiction is that of the space mine, which include fairly traditional contact mines (which is a rather silly concept given the sheer scale of space) and proximity fused missiles.
