A mutation is a change in the genetic material of a living organism. Many different types of mutation exist, including substitution, addition or deletion. On the molecular level, the change can be as small as a single nucleotide or large portions of a chromosome.
Mutations range in effect from deadly to highly beneficial with many being neutral.
