The United Kingdom from 1600 was a prominent European nation, creating colonies which would latter become nations such as the United State, Canada, Australia and New Zealand and by the early 19th century, britian was the most powerful nation on earth. The United Kingdom also laid the foundations for much of the world's current democratic tradtions, developed much in the line of technology, started the industrial revolution and contributed much in the lines of science (Netwonian Physics and Evolution by means of natural selection being big on the list) and culture. Even though the british empire fell apart in the first half of the ninenteenth century, Britian remains a wealthy, powerful and culturally infuential nation.

From the 17th through 19th centuries, the English (and later the unified British) engaged in campaigns of colonial expansion, settling at first with colonies in North America and later creatint trading ports in India and the East Indies, with plantations in the Caribbean Sea, it eventually expanded to include India, Australia, Canada, and large chunks of Africa. This was possible due to naval supremacy.
