The Last Great Time War was a military conflict between the Dalek Empire and the Time Lords. Both sides freely used proxies and superweapons, resulting in the near complete extinction of both species and their elimination as political powers.
Both sides in the war attempted to use time travel to reverse defeats and prevent losses, causing the chain of cause and effect in the war to become increasingly convoluted as it progressed. The extensive use of time travel in the fighting eventually caused the combatants to become "time-locked", isolating all of Dalek and Time Lord history from further access via time travel.
