Biological warfare refers to the use of living organisms, mostly microbes such as bacteria and viruses, to kill or harm enemies in war. A weapon system designed to deliver such organisms to targets or to produce organisms for use in warfare is known as a biological weapon. Biological weapons have been used since the Middle Ages in methods such as throwing corpses from victims of plagues into castles and towns during sieges.
