Travis is a spacer-hick who likes being the helmsman of something faster than a barge. He likes to pretend that his youth as a spacer makes him more qualified for space exploration than other members of the Enterprise crew, but he hardly saw anything but the inside of a freighter during all those years, so that experience is essentially worthless. No one cares what he likes.
