The Primarchs are twenty genetically engineered individuals created by the God Emperor of mankind, who were the progenitors of the Space Marines.
Primarchs are superhuman to an unknown degree. The Imperial Space Marines were created from genetic material extracted from the Primarchs, but the lore implies that the Primarchs are far stronger and tougher than the Marines created from them. Horus was able to fight the Emperor and nearly win, but Horus was receiving additional power from the Chaos Gods at the time.
Some of the corrupted Primarchs are believed to be still alive in the Eye of Terror, but none of the loyal Primarchs are alive and active (although there are indications that they are not all dead, either).
