Avatar: The Last Airbender is an American Animated Television series produced by Nickelodeon and created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. A western animated series done in styles closer to those used in Anime, the series is popular among the denizens of SD.net. A full length live action film adaptation of the show's first season was released in 2010, but was generally considered to be of low quality by moviegoers. Similar film adaptations of the second and third season are planned. A new animated television series set 70 years after the first series has been announced, due to premiere in November 2011.
World
The world of Avatar is one in which several Asiatic civilizations exist. The most notable and prominant fantasy element of the series is the act of Bending, in which various individuals command elemental forces through various martial arts. There are four types of bending, with only a special figure known as the Avatar being able to command all four of them.
The Civilizations of the Avatar World are as such...
- Water Tribes-The Water Tribes are several societies that are linked through having among their ranks Waterbenders. The Largest two are based in the North and Southern Poles of the Avatar World, although a smaller tribe exists in the Earth Kingdom.
- Earth Kingdom-The Earth Kingdom is the largest civilization in the Avatar world, a civilization controlling a massive continent ruled from the massive fortified city of Ba Sing Se. From the Earth Kingdom's population come the Geokinetic Earthbenders.
- Fire Nation-An Agressive expansionist power comming out of a tropical volcanic island chain to the West of the Earth Kingdom and serve as the primary antagonists. The Fire Nation has been engaged in a war of expansion into the Earth Kingdom for the past century and is notable for being industrialized. From the Fire Nation come Firebenders, which have the ability to manipulate Fire, with higher level Firebenders being able to fire off bolts of lightning
- Air Nomads-Several populations of monastic airbenders that lived in isolated Temple cities. The air nomads were whiped out 100 years before the events of the series by the Fire Nation, save for the young Avatar Aang.
