The Lars are a family of moisture farmers on the desert world of Tatooine eking out a humble existence at their homestead on the back-water world.
Cliegg Lars
Cliegg appeared in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones. He purchased Shmi Skywalker from Watto and married her. When she was kidnapped by Tusken Raiders, he led a rescue effort that resulted in the death of 26 of the 30 humans in the party and the loss of Cliegg's leg. The injury prevented him from organizing any further search attempts, and he accepted the thought that she was dead. Anakin Skywalker appeared a month later, searching for his mother, and after killing the Sandpeople who tortured her to the brink of death, brought back her body. Cliegg paid his final respects.
Owen Lars
Owen was Cliegg's son from a previous marriage. He was the guardian of Luke Skywalker and felt a strong need to protect the young Luke from the evils of the Galaxy and discourage Luke's desire for adventure. Most of all, he didn't want Luke to follow the path his father took, so he made up a story about Luke's father being a navigator on a freighter. Owen continuously tried to postpone Luke's application to the Imperial Academy for the same reason.
Beru Whitesun Lars
Beru was Owen's girlfriend in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones and his wife in Star Wars: A New Hope. She served the role of mother to young Luke after she and Owen adopted their nephew at the end of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, although it is unknown if she and Owen were married at that time. She tried to be a moderator between Luke's desire to leave Tatooine and Owen's overbearing protection of their nephew, going so far as trying to persuade Owen to allow Luke's application to the academy.
Owen and Beru were killed by Imperial Stormtroopers who had traced a pair of droids to their homestead.
