The Battle of Geonosis (22BBY) was the first battle of the Clone Wars and the first deployment of the Clone troopers of the Grand Army of the Republic.
Outline of the Battle
After Mace Windu's ill-fated commando mission resulted in the deaths of dozens of Jedi, the Clone Army under the command of Master Yoda arrived. After extracting the surviving Jedi and Senator Padmé Amidala, Yoda ordered his troops to engage the Separatist forces in order to destroy several grounded ships. The droid forces counter-attacked but were unable to prevent the destruction of several Techno-Union frigates and at least one Trade Federation core ship. Count Dooku fled to a remote hanger, where he dueled Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker and Yoda before finally escaping in his private starship.
Despite its tactical success and heavy Separatist losses, the battle was a strategic failure. The Separatist leaders and large elements of their fleet escaped with large numbers of intact battle droids, which they used to launch a full-scale war against the Republic.
