Mines are a catagory of Military Ordinance designed for area denial. Mines normally consist of an explosive and a triggering mechanism designed to set it off when an intruder passes nearby or touches it. Common catagories of Mines include antipersonnel, anti tank and antiship.
Mines in Science Fiction
A somewhat common concept in science fiction is that of the Space Mine, which include fairly traditional contact mines (which is a rather silly concept given the sheer scale of space) and proximity fused missiles.
