Today is the Catholic feast day of Saint Paula the Bearded. According to legend, in the fourth century, the widow Paula was pursued into a church by a lustful young Roman man, where she prayed for a miracle to save her virtue. God supposedly responded so that “a beard and moustache quickly grew” on her face, thus driving away the man in disgust. She is considered the patroness saint of widows.
Seriously. I’m not making this up.
