Excellent points, Aaron.
The only gestapo in the Empire is in the EU. The one thing that the Original Trilogy failed to clearly explain is why the rebels are rebelling. The Senate was disbanded, which is a good reason to rebel, but the Alliance existed before it was disbanded.
The only real cause seems to be a Force veneration. Indeed, the rebels seem blind to the faults of the Jedi. Given the choice, I'll live in Palpatine's Empire over Yoda's Republic any time.

As far as bombardment goes, I still don't think we'll get to see it, and if we do, I don't think it will be Naboo, and if it is, I don't think it will be Confederate terrorism. It would most likely be a military target, or if it is a civilian target, it will probably be perpetrated by the Republic/Empire. The Confederacy could not afford to commit such an act, when they have populations to win over and investors to keep happy.

The one hope I have for seeing bombardment in the prequels stems from this quote, from the the AOTC Incredible Cross Sections (p. 22):

"Orbital bombardments with high-yield proton torpedoes and surgical turbolaser strikes hit enemy fortifications when capture is not a priority. Armies entrenched deep underground may be subject to a last-resort "Base Delta Zero" fleet bombardment. Such operations reduce the upper crust of a planet to molten slag - a spectacle unseen in the Republic until the Clone Wars."

So, a BDZ officially occurs at some point in the Clone Wars, thanks in no small part to our good friend Curtis Saxton. Whether or not the details of this event will be illuminated, either in EIII or another book is yet to be seen.
