My best guess is that it's the same answer than in action movie. Good people never get hurt. Simple as that.
Of course, they have the Force, but they CAN'T avoid possibly ALL the debris.
As we have seen in AOTC, and in Mr. Wong site, the Jedi are only beaten if they are under overwhelming conditions.
I think normally, they would have been unprepared to avoid all the debris.
So I presume the rule of the action movies applies here.
I know it's not an enjoyable theory, but that's the only one that can really explain that situation!
I really don't see anything, I hope someone will find something better.
